Sewing is a fun and easy hobby that anyone in the family can take up this hobby. If you want to teach your children how to sew, then you’re going to need to buy a child-friendly sewing machine that your child won’t outgrow too quickly.

This machine should be easy to use, small, compact, and have the proper safety features.

Finding a sewing machine for your child is time-consuming since many different sewing machine models are available. Don’t worry; I’ve done the research to help make this process easier.  In this post, I will go over the 8 best sewing machines for kids.

Let’s get started. 🦄

What I Like
Overall, the Brother XM2701 is excellent for both beginners and pros. It’s easy to use functions that make it excellent for kids. This is the perfect choice if you are looking for a lightweight sewing machine that is packed with features.

While there are other similar sewing machines that are just as light, they do not come with all the features that this machine has. The machine sews smoothly. Issues with tension or bunching are basically non existent. The only major con it has is that it has a sensitive foot pedal.

For children 12 years old, it may be better to choose models with a speed-regulating button.

What I Like
The straightforward machines functionality allows your child to focus more on learning how to sew.

The most significant disadvantage of this machine is the lack of an automatic needle threader. An automatic needle threader is an invaluable tool, especially for beginners.

Because the machine doesn’t have an automatic needle threader, it’s much easier to break the needle and make mistakes.

4. SINGER Simple 3232 – Best For Kids Under 5

Specifications

Weight: 13 Pounds
Machine Size: 15 x 7.5 x 12 inches
Speed: 860 SPM

Features

32 built-in stitches with 110 stitch applications
1-step buttonhole
Built-in automatic needle threader
Adjustable Stitch Length
High-Presser Foot Lifter
Free Arm
Reverse Lever
Heavy Duty Metal Frame

What I Like

Preset Stitches
Simple 3232 has 32 built-in stitches. All they have to do is turn the stitch dial, and they can start sewing. Within these 27 preset stitches are with 110 stitch applications.
Pre-adjusted stitches provide different designed stitches to allow your kids more flexibility even as a beginner. Each stitch application provides a specific sewing technique that you can do with a selected stitch.

Adjustable Stitch Length
Adjustable stitch length allows you to change a stitch’s appearance by increasing or decreasing the stitches’ distance. This feature is helpful for different stitch techniques.

Built-in automatic needle threader
Another reason why SINGER Simple 3232 is an excellent option for kids is its automatic needle threader. The automatic needle threader is invaluable, especially for beginners.
It pushes thread through the needle seamlessly, which helps save time and prevents mistakes.

Heavy Duty Metal Frame
The machine’s metal interior frame makes it durable.

Free Arm
The free arm feature makes stitching hard to reach areas easy such as trouser hems, sleeve cuffs, and other smaller projects. This feature allows kids to use this machine even as they reach a more advanced level in sewing.

High-Presser Foot Lifter
The Presser’s foot has an extra high position available so you can sew on thick fabrics. It allows you to sew through multiple layers of fabric, such as denim, without a problem.

Reverse Lever
The reverse lever allows you to sew stitches in reverse. It’s especially helpful to secure a seam at the beginning and end to prevent unraveling. This automatic reverse lever allows kids to progress their projects quickly.

What I Dislike

Stitches can be improved
I find this machine to struggle and bunch up with the silk or the polyester chiffon. It also struggled slightly with the scallop stitch. Compared to similar machines, this one is a bit harder to set up. Finally, the needle freezes as soon as you let off the pedal. It doesn’t automatically stop in the up position.
Positives
Built-in stitches allow beginners and kids can start sewing right away
Buttonholes are sewn in one step
The automatic needle threader saves time and prevents mistakes
Adjustable stitch length
The heavy-duty metal frame makes it durable
Compact and lightweight
High presser foot lifter
Negatives
Some manual functions are sometimes confusing for kids
The threader and Bobbin can confusing
Machine design is not as sleek as other similar machines

Who Should buy

This machine is great for schools for three reasons:
– It comes with over 100 stitch applications, which makes it great for a large number of different projects and ages
– It’s lightweight and portable, making it easy to move across schools or classrooms
– It’s easy to use with features such as 31 built in stitches, automatic needle threaders and the availability of online learning materials make it easy to start sewing right out of the box.
